Rules of the Chamber of Strategy Puzzle

In the Chamber of Strategy in BG3, the player’s goal is to checkmate the Purple King in two turns. The chess puzzle follows standard international chess rules, and players have three chances to make correct moves. Each failed move will reduce the number of opportunities and reset the board.

Piece movement rules:

  • Pawn: Moves forward one square, can choose to move two squares on the first move. Can capture diagonally one square forward.
  • Knight: Moves in an L-shape, moving two squares in one direction, then one square perpendicular to that direction.
  • Bishop: Moves diagonally without restriction.
  • Rook: Moves horizontally or vertically without restriction.
  • Queen: Moves diagonally, horizontally, or vertically without restriction.
  • King: Moves one square in any direction.

Challenge rules:

  1. Players must interact with the Balduran statue to initiate the challenge.
  2. In the first turn, players need to use the Queen to capture the pawn in front of the king, forcing the enemy king to move.
  3. In the second turn, players again use the Queen to capture the pawn in front of the enemy king, achieving checkmate.
  4. By cleverly using pieces, players can choose to directly attack the king; using spells like Witch Bolt is also a viable solution, but must be executed in Turn Base mode to ensure effectiveness.

Methods to Solve the Chamber of Strategy Puzzle

In BG3, players face a chess puzzle in the Wyrmway Chamber of Strategy, with the goal of checkmating the Purple King in two turns. Here are detailed steps and tips for solving it:

Setup of the Chamber of Strategy chessboard
After entering the Chamber of Strategy, players interact with the Balduran statue to trigger the challenge. On the board, players control White pieces, with the Purple King located in the back right corner, protected by two pawns and a rook.

Actions in the first turn
Choose the Queen and move diagonally to capture one pawn in front of the king. At this point, the king will move to the left behind another pawn due to being in check. This move not only guarantees an attack but also creates opportunities for the next turn.

Actions in the second turn

  • In the center of the board, players can use the Queen again. At this time, a Bishop protects the king.
  • Move the Queen diagonally to capture the pawn directly in front of the king. The king must capture the Queen, which exposes it to the Bishop‘s attack.

Alternative methods
In addition to traditional chess solutions, players can also directly attack the king by casting the Witch Bolt. This method is viable in the game, as the king is particularly vulnerable to lightning damage. Casting at the right moment can easily complete the challenge.

Notes

  1. During the chess puzzle, players have three chances, and if they fail to complete it within the specified turns, the board will reset.
  2. The movement rules for pieces are the same as in international chess, so be sure to familiarize yourself with each piece’s movement to make correct decisions.

After completing the challenge in the Chamber of Strategy, players will be able to continue on to Ansur‘s quest, progressing to the next adventure.
